Safety First, Then Teamwork!

If you do decide to leave your pet outside, or you simply want your pet to have some “outside time,” there are excellent options for you that provide your dog or cat some freedom outside while keeping them as safe as possible.

First, make sure that all gates have secure locks on them. Do not permit gardeners, construction workers, etc. to come in and out of your yard without your supervision. Check the gate after they leave. If backyard access is important, such as in families with children, install a separate dog or cat area that can be secured.     Second, if you have a small dog or cat we suggest that you look into products that keep other predators out of the yard. A tall fence is not enough! Do a regular “Parameter Check” and walk your fence line. Look for any weak areas, places where animals are digging out or into your yard, gaps in fencing at gates, etc.

Also, if you have a small dog we strongly suggest adopting a larger dog (please go to your shelter or contact a rescue group.) A larger dog will decrease the likelihood that a predator will come into your yard. You can also build an enclosure that has a roof, which is important to keep predators out and your pet safe inside! This is ideal for cats too. You can also go on-line and check out lots of pictures and get your own ideas.  We have found the easiest option is to buy a large outside dog run, and install a roof. You can purchase a used one on Craigslist or buy one at a local hardware store. You can easily make it as cozy as you want – even put an old sofa or mattress in the run for comfort for a dog, or perches for a cat.

Lastly, we would like to help spread the word about Scuzzy who went missing in San Francisco on 8/9/2012.
